How to Save Energy at Home

If you are bogged down by high electricity bills, you may not be watching your energy consumption. The energy consumed by fixtures like the dishwasher, TV and others that are used on a daily basis can add up and increase your bills. However, if you are looking to save on energy, there are a few simple tips that can help you. Below are four ways in which you can save energy at home:

i) Turn off unused electrical fixtures

Fixtures like the TV set, radio, microwave, dishwasher and others are the major energy consumers in the home. Granted, the fixtures do not use a lot of energy. However, since they are frequently used, the cumulative energy they use up can be significant.

Any fixtures that are not in use should be switched off and unplugged from the sockets. The same also applies for unused light bulbs and other lighting equipment.

Use fixtures that conserve energy

Buy green fixtures that conserve energy and replace older models. Most of the fixtures in the market today are made with an emphasis on conserving energy. For example, when not in use, the fixtures may automatically switch off. The amount of energy you can serve from such green fixtures can be significant.

When replacing your light bulbs or any other electronic fixtures, go for those that are energy efficient. Energy efficient devices are usually tested to ensure they conform to set regulations regarding emissions and energy consumption.

iii) Use heat more efficiently

Check that the heater is producing optimal heat at home. To make your heater more efficient, close the windows and doors when heating the house. Also, check for any openings in the home that can be used as a gateway by heat to escape.

Take showers instead of baths and use low-flow showerheads for more energy savings. When cleaning, wash full loads of dishes and clothes.

Lower down the thermostat to about 120?F to save on the energy consumed by the heater. If you live in a house built before the early 2000s, you might want your heater replaced by a more efficient one.

iv) Use natural heat to the maximum

Whenever you can, use natural light and heat to supplement the work done by light bulbs and other home fixtures. For example, let in natural light from the sun when reading in the study. If you want to switch on the lights, make sure the house is dark and the sun light does not help.

The heat from the sun can also be used in the home, and help you save on energy consumption. For instance, you can hang out your clothes to dry in the sun rather than using a drier.

The above tips can help you save on energy consumption at home.
